Greenwashing

Good morning, and Happy Earth Day.

Earth Day began as a US holiday in 1970 and today is celebrated by hundreds of countries globally.

On this day honoring our planet, it may be worthwhile to think about greenwashing. While we pay respect to the earth and take action in our own lives to make a difference, big business still heavily relies on fossil fuels. This can be overshadowed by false marketing campaigns promoting ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions or tout carbon credits. The language in such campaigns is often just that: language. If you look past the language what action will you find?

For real-life examples of greenwashing, read Bloomberg Green’s investigation into the Nature Conservancy selling carbon credits to big companies like JP Morgan, BlackRock, and even Disney.
